I can’t think of a time since the Games were hosted by Nazi Germany that the Olympics have been so synonymous with oppression, thuggery and hypocrisy. I still wish that Canada would boycott the Olympics, although that’s almost certainly not going to happen. In an Absolut world, I’d love to see the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada summarily cancelled, and the International Olympic Committee informed by way of a terse, one line email. However, British Columbia’s planning on making a mountain of money out of the Winter Games in 2010, so a lot of politicians back home are just hoping that if they stick their fingers in their ears, this will all go away and we can all sit down to a nice, safe, non-controversial, non-binding ”dialogue”. Canadian politicians LOVE dialogue.
Good for the protestors in all countries on the relay route, or “Harmonious Journey” as it’s been officially dubbed by faceless bureaucrats. I’m hoping that San Francisco will show the world and the Olympic Committee what a lot of us think of the disgraceful farce the Games have become.
